A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Monday, according to the Philippine state seismology agency Phivolcs. The quake occurred 164 km southeast of Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental province at a depth of 86 km, with Phivolcs indicating that no damage is expected.
Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol stated that the earthquake originated along the Philippine Trench. He clarified that this event is not connected to the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8, as its epicenter was over 250 km away. The death toll from the earlier, more powerful quake has risen to 65, with 36 individuals still missing, according to the country's civil defence agency.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences reported the earthquake's depth at 117 km and initially stated a magnitude of 6.3, differing slightly from Phivolcs' report.
