Kazakhstan President Tokayev seeks deeper EU ties on energy, AI, and trade

Tokayev noted that the EU is Kazakhstan's largest trading and investment partner, with the goal of modernizing and diversifying Kazakhstan's economy for mutual benefit. He stressed the need for partnerships based on respect and shared interests, rather than retreating into rival blocs, as global supply chains become increasingly vulnerable to national security concerns. Kazakhstan positions itself as a crucial link between Europe and Asia.

Key areas for enhanced cooperation include energy, agriculture, and food security. Kazakhstan currently supplies a significant portion of the EU's crude oil and natural uranium imports and sees potential in expanding grain exports to Europe. The country also aims to leverage its resources in critical raw materials, renewable energy, and new industries, combining them with European knowledge, technology, and investment.

Connectivity is a central theme, with a focus on developing the Middle Corridor transportation route between Europe and Asia, aligning with the EU's Global Gateway strategy. Beyond physical goods movement, digital connectivity, including artificial intelligence, digital governance, and trusted technologies, is a priority for Kazakhstan as it aims to become a digital state. Tokayev expressed a desire for European tech companies to ensure technological progress remains inclusive, secure, and human-centered.

Tokayev also highlighted progress in visa facilitation for students, researchers, and entrepreneurs, as well as Kazakhstan's participation in programs like Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe. He underscored that a strategic partnership must ultimately benefit citizens and pointed to ongoing political and economic reforms in Kazakhstan aimed at strengthening public accountability and enhancing institutional effectiveness.
