Japan and Italy are set to deepen their cooperation in the space sector, with a joint pledge to strengthen regulations to address issues such as attacks on satellites. This agreement follows the first bilateral space consultations held in Tokyo, an initiative aimed at enhancing strategic collaboration between the two nations.
The consultations, promoted by the Italian Embassy in Tokyo, covered a broad spectrum of topics including space governance, security, defense, industrial, commercial, and scientific cooperation. Both countries recognize the growing importance of the space sector from economic, technological, and security perspectives and aim to bolster the competitiveness of their respective space industries.
This dialogue is an operational follow-up to commitments made by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during their summit in January. The discussions emphasized the potential for cooperation across all space fields, including civil and security aspects, and the importance of developing international rules and norms, particularly concerning space debris. The next round of consultations is scheduled to take place in Italy in 2027.
