Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf issued a stern warning to the United States, emphasizing that any commitments made in a potential memorandum of understanding or future agreement with Tehran must be honored without exception. Qalibaf's remarks on X stated, “Commitments made must be commitments kept. No ifs, no buts, no excuses,” adding, “For the close deal ahead, there is no other way. You reap what you sow.”
These comments follow statements from Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who outlined the framework of a possible memorandum of understanding with Washington that could lead to a broader agreement. Araghchi indicated that an agreement has never been closer, with terms including an end to war on all fronts, addressing the Strait of Hormuz, and a mechanism for frozen funds. However, he clarified that nuclear issues and sanctions relief are deferred to a final agreement, not the current MoU, and that the Strait of Hormuz administration would be linked to Iran and Oman.
Earlier, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had announced that the U.S. and Iran had agreed on the wording of a deal to end their war, with mediators working to finalize it. Sharif stated that peace was closer than ever. U.S. President Donald Trump had also indicated significant progress and shared Araghchi's post on social media. The conflict, launched by the U.S. and Israel, has destabilized the Middle East and disrupted shipping. The emerging agreement is expected to initiate the process of destroying or removing Iran's highly enriched uranium within 60 days, with provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated he and Trump were in "full agreement" that Iran must not possess nuclear weapons, while Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz indicated Israel expects Trump to uphold its interests and warned that Israel could act independently if necessary. Ex-U.S. ambassador Henry Ensher described the MoU as a stopgap, with real nuclear talks expected to take a long time.
