Gunmen attacked a farming community in Nigeria's northwestern Zamfara state, killing at least 15 people in an assault that took place on Friday. The region has a history of violence, and no group has yet claimed responsibility for this latest attack.
Abdullaziz Yari, a lawmaker for the district, characterized the incident as a "terrorist attack." Yahaya Yari, the local government chairman, appeared in a viral video appealing for intervention from President Bola Tinubu and the junior defense minister to end the ongoing killings.
This attack follows a similar incident earlier in the month in Zamfara state, where 17 farmers were killed and at least 13 others were wounded. The United Nations reports that an insurgency in northern Nigeria has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced millions over the years. Armed gangs are active in the north-central and northwest regions, engaging in kidnappings for ransom, taxing farming communities, and illegal mining.
Despite repeated promises by the Tinubu administration to curb the crisis, it persists. Last year, Nigeria entered into a military cooperation agreement with the U.S. following a diplomatic dispute where U.S. officials asserted a "Christian genocide" was occurring, an accusation Nigeria's government rejected.
