German journalist Eva Maria Michelmann has been released from a Syrian prison after months of detention and has returned to Berlin. Her lawyer, Roland Meister, confirmed her release on Monday, stating that she is doing as well as can be expected given the circumstances.
Michelmann, 36, and her Kurdish-Turkish colleague Ahmet Polad were detained by Syrian government forces in January during military operations in Raqqa. Her whereabouts were not known until days after the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called for her release in April, as international pressure mounted.
