France has stated that it will not approve the lifting of United Nations sanctions on Iran unless it is satisfied with the terms of a nuclear deal. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot emphasized that any talks between the U.S. and Iran should also address Iran's ballistic missile program and its support for regional proxies.
As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, France's approval is necessary for the removal of sanctions. The U.S. and Iran have agreed to a 60-day negotiation period concerning Iran's nuclear activities, with any final agreement requiring endorsement from the Security Council. France, alongside Britain and Germany, is seeking a more significant role in shaping these upcoming negotiations, aiming to ensure a robust agreement that addresses Iran's broader destabilizing activities.
Separately, the French foreign ministry denied allegations that it had requested the cancellation of a rally planned by the Iranian opposition group, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), in Paris. The group stated that Paris police had banned the rally, which had been coordinated with authorities for two months, and that it was appealing the decision.
