Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong have initiated a month-long fundraising drive to assist families impacted by a recent 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the southern Philippines. Representatives from the Abra Tingguian Ilocano Society are collecting donations, with a target of HK$20,000 (US$2,550), to provide essential aid like food, drinking water, and medicine to affected communities, particularly in Mindanao.
Dolores Balladares, a spokeswoman for the Asian Migrants Coordinating Body, stated that while some members' families were safe, their community experienced devastation. She noted that three members had families affected by the earthquake.
Separately, two Filipino domestic helpers, Pabuaya Imee-mahilum, 24, and Tibay Alelie-perez, 33, who had been reported missing in Hong Kong for nearly two weeks, were found safe and unharmed. They were located by police at a shopping mall in Fo Tan on October 16, 2025. The pair had last been seen on October 4 in the Tsuen Wan area. Their disappearances had drawn attention to the social and financial pressures faced by migrant workers in Hong Kong, including outstanding debts. Police confirmed the incident had no suspicious elements.
