A devastating fire at the Flourish Stays B&B in Delhi's Malviya Nagar area has resulted in 22 fatalities, including eight members of the Aggarwal family. The patriarch, 75-year-old Radhe Shyam Aggarwal, passed away on Tuesday, reportedly without ever knowing the extent of his family's loss in the blaze that occurred on June 3.
The Aggarwal family had gathered in Delhi to support an elder relative undergoing treatment for a lung infection at Max Super Speciality Hospital Saket. Several family members checked into the nearby hotel to remain close to the hospital. The gathering, intended as a supportive reunion, tragically turned fatal when a fire broke out.
Among the deceased family members were Radhe Shyam Aggarwal's wife Premlata (70), son Vivek (47), daughter-in-law Tarjani (42), granddaughters Varya (16) and Jivisha (20), Premlata's sister Kamla (52), brother Ashok (56), and brother-in-law Jhaveri. Three of these relatives had extended their stay to spend more time with the family.
Authorities confirmed the death toll reached 22 after a Nigerian national died during treatment. Initial investigations into the incident have pointed to significant safety lapses at the hotel, including illegal construction, a locked terrace hindering escape, non-functional fire safety systems, and a lack of basic firefighting arrangements. The building, licensed for six rooms, was allegedly operating with around 25 rooms, far exceeding its capacity.
