A tense stand-off has emerged along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya's South West Garo Hills district after Bangladeshi authorities reportedly refused to accept a national pushed back by India's Border Security Force (BSF).
The individual, identified as a resident of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, had allegedly entered India illegally and was apprehended by the BSF. Following standard procedure, the BSF attempted to push the individual back across the border. However, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local residents on the Bangladeshi side allegedly refused to accept the person, leading to altercations between the border forces and the individual being stranded in 'no man's land'.
This incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened security concerns along the border. In a separate event, the BSF shot and killed two Bangladeshi nationals, identified as Ashikur (19) and Moshahid (22), who were attempting to cross illegally into India near the Sylhet-Meghalaya border. This incident took place amid significant unrest in Bangladesh following the death of young Islamist leader Osman Hadi, which triggered violent protests.
Indian authorities have consequently tightened security along the border to prevent any spillover of violence or illegal crossings. The situation has been further complicated by previous security incidents, including an attack on Meghalaya villagers by suspected Bangladesh police and criminals who illegally crossed into Indian territory. In that incident, the intruders fired shots, assaulted villagers, and attempted to abduct one person before fleeing. A joint operation by the BSF and Meghalaya Police led to the arrest of four suspects in connection with that attack. Additionally, BSF has apprehended smugglers and other Bangladeshi nationals attempting illegal entry.
