One person died and another was seriously injured after two freight trains collided on a bridge in Munich, Germany, early Saturday morning. The collision caused two railcars to derail and plunge approximately 5 meters onto the road below.
Emergency services were alerted around 1:40 AM. Approximately 60 emergency personnel initially responded to the scene. Police confirmed that the cargo was not hazardous and posed no danger to the public.
The cause of the collision remains unknown. Authorities estimate that the recovery of the derailed cars and subsequent repairs will take several days. Parts of the road network beneath the bridge may remain closed until Sunday.
A spokesperson for the rail operator Deutsche Bahn stated that the accident occurred on a line used exclusively by freight trains, and therefore, passenger services are not expected to be disrupted.
