A former engineer at Elon Musk's xAI has filed a lawsuit alleging he was fired for raising concerns about artificial intelligence safety risks, particularly concerning the company's chatbot, Grok. Devin Kim, who now heads the nonprofit Center for AI Safety, claims in the lawsuit filed in California state court that his efforts to implement safety guardrails were rejected by company leadership.
According to the lawsuit, Kim was among the initial hires at xAI in 2024 and was promoted to a leadership position. He alleges that his supervisor, xAI co-founder Jimmy Ba, disregarded Musk's expectations for safety testing and processes, and rejected Kim's insistence on implementing safety mechanisms. Kim claims he was abruptly fired in September, just before he was scheduled to present on AI safety to company leadership.
The lawsuit accuses xAI and SpaceX of retaliation and wrongful discharge, violating California law, and seeks unspecified monetary damages. The suit comes as SpaceX prepares for a potential initial public offering. SpaceX and Musk's other ventures have faced scrutiny over alleged safety issues, including workplace injuries at SpaceX and concerns about self-driving technology in Tesla vehicles. xAI has also faced multiple lawsuits and investigations over its Grok AI product, including allegations of generating millions of AI-altered sexualized images.
