Fuel costs for U.S. passenger airlines surged 78% in April to nearly $6.5 billion compared to the prior year, according to the U.S. Transportation Department. The department cited the Middle East conflict as the primary driver for the increase in jet fuel prices. Month-over-month, fuel costs were up 26%, even as airlines consumed 2.6% less fuel. The cost per gallon of fuel in April reached $4.11, an increase of $1.81 from April of the previous year. The International Air Transport Association expects the industry's total fuel bill to rise to approximately $350 billion this year, accounting for nearly a third of operating costs.
