President Donald Trump has signed a 14-point agreement with Iran, which he described as a significant win for the US. The deal includes concessions to Iran, such as allowing for civilian uranium enrichment and returning frozen assets, in an effort to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and avert a global economic downturn.
Despite Trump's claims of success, Iran's chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, stated that the agreement was "a record of US failure." The agreement also involves the US potentially returning billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets.
Domestically, the deal has faced criticism from some Republican senators. Senator Ted Cruz voiced strong opposition, warning against giving financial aid to Iran, while Senator Bill Cassidy indicated his disapproval. However, Senator Lindsey Graham, a Trump ally, reportedly softened his stance after a conversation with US special envoy Steve Witkoff.
