The Tamil Nadu government has issued an order empowering the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) to grant planning permissions for high-rise buildings. This decision, following orders from Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, aims to simplify the approval process and ensure faster clearances for such projects within the Chennai metropolitan area.
Previously, the approval process for high-rise buildings was lengthy, involving applications to the CMDA, field inspections, detailed scrutiny, evaluation by the multi-storeyed building committee, and finally, a specific government order. Under the new directive, the CMDA is fully authorized to grant the final planning permission, provided the projects comply with standard building rules and regulations and receive the necessary nod from the multi-storeyed building committee.
This reform is expected to significantly boost urban development and ease of doing business in Chennai, according to an official release from the secretariat.
