Scammers exploit summer vacation season to target retirees

Fake rental listings are posted on platforms like Airbnb, Vrbo, and Facebook Marketplace, often priced below market value with convincing photos and reviews. The scam typically involves convincing the victim to pay outside the platform via wire transfer, Zelle, or gift cards, only for the victim to discover the rental does not exist or is occupied by someone else. The FTC reported that travel, vacation, and timeshare fraud led to $274 million in reported consumer losses in 2024, with older victims experiencing higher median losses. Those aged 70-79 reported a median loss of $1,000, and those 80 and over reported $1,650.

The grandparent scam, a type of impersonation scam, also sees a spike during the summer when children are out of school, making it harder for grandparents to verify their grandchildren's whereabouts. Scammers research potential victims' personal information, including grandchildren's names and potential travel plans, often obtained from data broker sites, social media, and genealogy platforms. Impersonation scams, including grandparent scams, resulted in nearly $3 billion in losses in 2024, with victims aged 60 and over being disproportionately affected.

Furthermore, scammers leverage public Wi-Fi networks in tourist-heavy areas like airports and hotel lobbies. By setting up "evil twin" networks that mimic legitimate ones, they can monitor user activity and capture sensitive information such as passwords, email logins, and banking details, especially when users are handling financial information while traveling.
