Sanchez gains traction ahead of Peru runoff, poll shows

Ahead of Peru's presidential runoff election on Sunday, June 7, leftist candidate Roberto Sanchez has gained ground against conservative frontrunner Keiko Fujimori, according to an Ipsos poll released on Thursday. The poll indicated a statistical tie between the two candidates, with Sanchez securing 43.8% of support and Fujimori gaining 43.2%. The survey was conducted on June 3 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.1%. Approximately 13% of respondents indicated they would vote blank or annul their ballot. A previous Ipsos poll released on May 31 showed Fujimori leading Sanchez, with 38% support compared to Sanchez's 35%, and 27% of voters still undecided. In the first round of the presidential vote on April 12, Fujimori won with 17.18% of votes, while Sanchez narrowly came second with 12.03%. It is illegal within Peru to publish polls during the final week before a presidential election, though surveys can be conducted if not published by local media.
