Paris Hilton returned to the Provo Canyon School in Utah on Monday, the same facility where she alleges she was abused as a teenager, to support families who have filed lawsuits against the institution. Hilton, now 45, is a prominent advocate for reforms within the 'troubled teen industry,' a network of for-profit residential centers for children with behavioral issues.
Hilton's visit occurred as two families filed lawsuits alleging their children suffered mistreatment at the school. One suit details a 13-year-old who sustained a fractured jaw and traumatic brain injury after another resident assaulted him. Another family claims their daughter experienced kidney failure due to delayed medical attention for severe stomach pain and nausea.
During her visit, Hilton expressed her determination to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves, stating, "Today is that day, and I am not backing down." She also warned parents about misleading marketing tactics used by such facilities.
The current administration of Provo Canyon School, which has new ownership, stated it cannot comment on past events but emphasized that the safety, dignity, and well-being of students are its highest priorities. In May, state health officials placed conditions on the school's license, including a prohibition on new clients, due to staff failing to seek immediate medical care for a student with serious injuries. These conditions are set to expire on Thursday.
Hilton has previously testified before Congress and state legislatures, contributing to the passage of protective laws in Utah and 15 other states.
