A jury has awarded $176 million to the family of Mark and Jacob Iskander, two young brothers killed in a September 2020 crash. Rebecca Grossman, the estranged wife of prominent surgeon Dr. Peter Grossman, was found guilty of second-degree murder for striking the children with her vehicle at nearly 80 mph. Prosecutors stated that Grossman had prescription drugs and alcohol in her system at the time. She was reportedly racing her former boyfriend, former MLB pitcher Scott Erickson, who was also driving at high speeds and found negligent in the crash. The boys' mother managed to save their youngest brother and herself by diving out of the way of Erickson's car. Grossman fled the scene. Scott Erickson, who pitched for several MLB teams and won the World Series with the Minnesota Twins in 1991, was also found negligent. In 2024, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Joseph Brandolino sentenced Grossman to 15 years to life in prison, rejecting a prosecutor's request for a 34-year-to-life sentence, citing Grossman's lack of a criminal record and philanthropic history, while acknowledging the "unimaginable loss" for the family.
