Democrats Aisha Wahab and Melissa Hernandez have secured the top two positions in the special election primary for California's 14th Congressional District, ensuring that a Democrat will serve out the remainder of former U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell's term. Swalwell resigned from Congress in April following allegations of sexual assault and misconduct.
Wahab, currently the State Senate's assistant majority leader, and Hernandez, a BART director and former mayor of Dublin, will face each other in a special general election on August 18. The winner will serve in Congress until January.
Both candidates also advanced from the primary to compete in the regular general election in November for a full two-year term. The district is considered heavily Democratic.
Wahab has campaigned on a platform of affordability and sustainability, while Hernandez has focused on addressing rising housing costs and immigration reform.
