Criminal probe launched into police officer's alleged AI misuse

Derbyshire police confirmed they have launched a criminal investigation into the alleged use of AI systems by an officer to generate evidential material. The force is collaborating with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and is engaging with defence teams and courts regarding potentially impacted cases. The investigation is in its early stages, and no arrests have been made.

This case follows warnings from Alex Murray, head of the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s Police AI centre, who had previously advised police forces to cease using AI for tasks like preparing court statements due to reliability concerns. Separately, the Metropolitan police are investigating hundreds of officers after deploying an AI tool from Palantir to identify misconduct, which led to the arrest of three officers for serious offenses.
