A pro-Russian opposition alliance in Armenia has filed a request to annul the results of the June 7 parliamentary election, alleging voting irregularities. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's Civil Contract party won the election.
The challenge to the election results could lead to political instability in Armenia, impacting its domestic policies and its relationships with Russia and Western countries.
A pro-Russian opposition alliance in Armenia has filed a petition to annul the results of the June 7 parliamentary election, alleging voting irregularities. The petition was submitted by the Strong Armenia party, whose member Aram Vardevanyan spoke to reporters in the capital Yerevan.
Strong Armenia secured 23.2% of the votes in the election. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's Civil Contract party won with 49.8% of the vote, continuing its tenure since 2018. Opposition groups have complained of arrests targeting their candidates and supporters prior to the vote.
The Central Election Commission is expected to release final results on Sunday. The commission had previously declared the tallies at two polling stations invalid due to a concentration of military personnel, which reduced the vote share for another opposition party, Prosperous Armenia, below the 4% threshold required for parliamentary representation.
International electoral observers acknowledged allegations of vote-buying and other violations but stated that voting proceeded smoothly in most polling stations.
