Minister of State at the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, Timmy Dooley, and CEO of Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), Dr. Eamonn Kelly, visited the site of a significant fish kill on the River Glyde in Co. Louth. The incident, which occurred on Friday, June 5, resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 fish across an approximately 25km stretch of the river in counties Louth and Monaghan. IFI has identified an agricultural discharge as the source of the pollution, which has since been stopped. Water samples have been sent for laboratory analysis, and IFI is preparing a file for potential prosecution. Fish mortalities included various species such as Atlantic salmon, eel, brown trout, pike, and minnow. Louth County Council is monitoring oxygen levels and confirmed the incident is clearing with levels returning to normal, and Uisce Éireann confirmed no impact on public water abstraction. Minister Dooley acknowledged the seriousness of the event and assured local communities of the utmost attention being given to the incident. He referenced a similar large-scale fish kill on the River Blackwater in Co. Cork last August, which led to the establishment of an inter-agency group and an independent review by the EU Joint Research Centre (JRC). Recommendations from that review, aimed at strengthening inter-agency collaboration, are being progressed, with an Inter-Agency Protocol Group established and nearing final approval. Minister Dooley emphasized the responsibility of landowners, businesses, and individuals to protect water quality and encouraged reporting of pollution. Dr. Kelly highlighted the devastating nature of the fish kill and appreciated the early public report that allowed for a rapid response from IFI teams, who will continue to monitor and assess the impact on the river.
