Hungary's Magyar links Ukraine EU talks to minority rights

Hungary's incoming Prime Minister Péter Magyar has stated that his government will only support the opening of Ukraine's European Union accession talks if Kyiv agrees to expand the rights of its ethnic Hungarian minority. Magyar intends to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to directly address these concerns. This conditionality signals a potential shift in Hungary's approach to Ukraine's EU aspirations.

In domestic political developments, Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok, who was appointed during the tenure of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, is reportedly resisting attempts by the new Prime Minister Péter Magyar to remove him from office. Sulyok has accused Magyar of abusing his power in this endeavor. Magyar's party, however, has characterized Sulyok's claims as mere political maneuvering aimed at retaining his position.

Furthermore, Hungary's new government has officially rescinded a ban that had been placed on 12 Ukrainian newspapers. This ban was originally imposed by the previous administration led by Viktor Orbán. Minister Zoltan Tarr, representing the new government, stated that this action is intended to foster improved relations with Kyiv and to actively counter tactics that sow division between the two nations.
