Zelenskyy urges fast-track EU membership for Ukraine at summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy implored European Union leaders at a summit in Brussels to expedite Ukraine's accession process, asserting that the nation's sacrifices and military strength make it uniquely deserving of fast-track membership. Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine has paid more than any other European country for its right to be free, independent, and European, and that its defense capabilities are vital for the continent's future security.

He called for the opening of all accession clusters in the coming weeks and urged endorsement of Kyiv's bid, emphasizing that Europe's future peace is being decided by Ukraine's defense efforts. Zelenskyy also advocated for a European ballistic missile program, noting it was a Ukrainian initiative and is now a joint effort with partners.

Zelenskyy remarked on improved relations with Hungary following its recent elections, suggesting a new opportunity to strengthen ties, and thanked neighboring countries like Poland, Romania, and Slovakia for their support. He also commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that Putin does not desire peace and is a "madman" aiming to restore the Soviet Union.
