European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen offered praise for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer following his announcement of resignation. Von der Leyen, head of the EU's executive, thanked "dear Keir" and commended his accomplishments during his nearly two-year term.
In a message shared on X, von der Leyen noted Starmer's growth into a statesman and specifically highlighted his contributions to reinforcing European defense amid U.S. President Donald Trump's expressed doubts about NATO and troop presence in Europe. The EU-UK security and defense partnership was established last year to foster joint military cooperation.
Von der Leyen also celebrated Starmer's strong support for Ukraine, a key aspect of his premiership. During his time in office, Starmer finalized a 100-year partnership agreement with Kyiv and co-launched the "Coalition of the Willing" with French President Emmanuel Macron. Earlier in the year, London pledged an additional £200 million to support a multinational force aimed at securing future peace agreements.
"European and Ukrainian security is stronger because of you," von der Leyen stated. This positive reception from Brussels contrasts with criticism from Washington, where Donald Trump took to Truth Social to blast Starmer's performance on immigration and energy policy, though he also wished him well.
