A Swedish court has sentenced a 61-year-old man to four years and five months in prison for aggravated pimping, attempted rape, assault, unlawful threats, and a minor doping offense, after he pressured his wife into selling sex to at least 120 men over three years. The court also ordered him to pay his wife 200,000 kronor ($21,300) in damages.
The man, who denied the charges and claimed he was helping his wife who allegedly wanted to sell sex, had been in custody since October. Prosecutors had identified approximately 120 buyers.
The court acquitted the defendant of eight counts of rape and three of attempted rape, stating it was unable to establish in seven cases that the plaintiff’s participation was involuntary and in one case, it wasn’t clear what sexual acts took place. The court noted the man coerced his wife into performing sexual acts, broadcasting them online, and receiving additional sex buyers.
Of the 29 individuals charged with purchasing sexual services, 28 were convicted. Two of these buyers received prison sentences, while the remainder were given fines or suspended sentences. Swedish law criminalizes buying and procuring sex but not selling it.
