Ligue 1 side Brest has officially appointed Julien Lachuer as their new head coach, signing him to a two-year contract. Lachuer steps into the role following the recent death of Éric Roy on June 17 due to cancer. The club announced the decision on Saturday, stating that Roy himself had expressed a desire for his former assistant, Lachuer, to take over the coaching responsibilities.
Lachuer, 49, has a long history with Brest, having played for the club as a goalkeeper between 2005 and 2010 when they were in Ligue 2. He transitioned to the coaching staff in 2010 and has served as Roy's assistant for the past three and a half years. He also briefly served as interim coach in 2022 after the dismissal of Michel Der Zakarian.
Roy, affectionately known as "King Éric" by Brest supporters, is credited with a remarkable turnaround for the club. He joined in early 2023 and successfully steered them away from relegation, ultimately guiding them to a third-place finish in Ligue 1 last season, securing qualification for the Champions League. Despite this success, the club's resources remain modest, and they finished 12th in the league last season. The club's leadership, brothers Denis and Gérard Le Saint, are opting for continuity by appointing Lachuer, aiming to build upon the foundations laid by Roy. Brest is also reportedly seeking to replace their Sporting Director, Grégory Lorenzi, who has moved to Marseille.
