Ten years after the United Kingdom's vote to leave the European Union, Bloomberg Originals is releasing content, including a podcast titled "Brussels, My Love?", that examines the economic consequences and political shifts resulting from Brexit. The podcast, part of the "Europe My Europe Series", features discussions on how both the UK and the EU have evolved since the 23 June 2016 referendum.
Contributors include Katy Lee and Dominic Kraemer, hosts of "The Europeans" podcast, who started their show to increase understanding of the EU institutions. They suggest the EU has become stronger since Brexit, as other member states observed the process and opted against leaving. Despite acknowledging the EU's imperfections, they view it as a stabilizing force.
Connor Allen, who participated in the Remain campaign, expressed a different perspective, noting changes within the EU itself, such as the banning of political parties, which has led to his disillusionment. Euronews reporter Shona Murray acknowledged the complexity of the situation but maintained that Brexit has had a negative impact on UK investment and employment. She also noted that many Leave voters' motivations stemmed from a rejection of perceived government neglect and disillusionment.
The content also points to an upcoming EU-UK summit in July 2026, which is anticipated to facilitate closer trade discussions between London and Brussels.
