Ethereum Foundation Leadership Exodus Continues With Co-Director's Departure

In a post on X, Wang stated that her decision was effective immediately and that she has not yet determined her next steps, emphasizing that "Ethereum has always been bigger than any role." Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin acknowledged the challenging nature of Wang's position, which she held alongside Tomasz Stanczak, another co-executive director who stepped down earlier this year.

This year, the Ethereum Foundation has seen an estimated 19 layoffs and departures. The loss of senior executives and core contributors has drawn particular attention as the foundation navigates intensifying competition, internal debates on governance, and market pressures on Ether. Buterin has defended the foundation's role, stating it is "one node, with a defined purpose, alongside other nodes," rather than the central authority for Ethereum.

In March, the foundation reiterated its commitment to decentralization as its core mandate. It aims for Ethereum's protocol and core application layers to become robust and trustless enough to function and evolve independently, even without the foundation or current core developers. This philosophy extends to Buterin's views on layer-2 networks, where he has expressed concerns about their decentralization and suggested that improvements to the Ethereum mainnet may offer a more suitable long-term scaling solution.
