The global push towards renewable energy sources is encountering significant logistical hurdles related to the transportation of essential components, according to DHL's chief executive. Tobias Meyer highlighted that the increasing dimensions of wind turbine blades, some measuring 153 meters for 26-MW turbines and even longer for 50-MW models, create substantial challenges for shipping vessels due to high wind loads and the need for specialized handling.
Furthermore, the widespread adoption of batteries for energy storage, driven by the need for reliable wind and solar power, introduces fire risks. These risks have led to increased insurance costs and have prompted some shipping companies to refuse the transport of electric vehicles and batteries altogether. A recent incident involved a ship carrying 3,000 cars, including 800 EVs, which had to be abandoned after a fire broke out.
Battery demand is projected to surge, with BloombergNEF forecasting a 17-fold increase between 2025 and 2050, reaching 3.8 terawatts. To mitigate these transportation issues, DHL is establishing a dedicated battery transport hub in the Netherlands and utilizing thermally insulated containers to reduce spontaneous combustion risks. The company also noted that the remote locations of many renewable energy installations necessitate the development of specialized infrastructure beyond established trade routes.
