The purchase, made through his Thiel Macro LLC hedge fund, involved approximately 1.2 million American Depositary Shares valued at about $76 million, according to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
This investment follows a meeting between Thiel and Argentine President Javier Milei in May, where they reportedly discussed economic policies, including Milei's opposition to wealth taxes. Local media also reported Thiel recently purchased a mansion in Buenos Aires.
Vista is a key player in the Vaca Muerta region, which holds substantial shale gas and oil reserves. The company currently produces 160,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day and has committed over $6.5 billion in investments in Argentina. Vista had previously increased its investment and production outlook for the Vaca Muerta formation.
Thiel Macro LLC's declared portfolio amounts to $418.7 million and includes stakes in other energy firms such as American Electric Power, DTE Energy, FirstEnergy, CMS Energy, and X-Energy, alongside Amazon.
