According to Ronan McAdam, an oceanographer with the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change, the enclosed nature of the Mediterranean basin prevents heat dissipation, exacerbating warming. Ernesto Azzuro, a marine biologist, stated that the Mediterranean of ancient times is lost forever, with many changes being irreversible. Invasive species, such as the spotted puffer fish and lionfish, are entering the sea primarily through the Suez Canal and are rapidly spreading westward, decimating indigenous populations like red mullet and destroying habitats by consuming algae.
The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean noted an acceleration in the spread of invasive species since the early 2000s, coinciding with rising sea temperatures. Approximately 1,000 invasive species have been identified, with 800 firmly established.
