Europe's tourist islands are grappling with severe water shortages due to drought, over-extraction, and seawater intrusion, leaving many off-grid properties without reliable water supplies. Hashem Arouzi, founder of climate tech company Ahbstra, has developed a solution: the ARK device, which harvests water from dry air.
Unveiled in Barcelona, the ARK utilizes Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), a technology recognized with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2025. MOFs possess a vast internal surface area that allows them to bind water vapor molecules directly from the air, even in arid conditions, without the energy-intensive cooling required by conventional atmospheric water generators. A modest amount of heat is needed to release the captured water.
Ahbstra claims its patented Suspended Particle Reactor maximizes MOF performance. Priced at approximately €175,000, the ARK is designed to provide water security for properties at risk of devaluation or abandonment. The harvested water can be used to replenish wells and cisterns or directly supply a property's mains system. Both Ahbstra and Atoco, founded by Nobel laureate Omar M. Yaghi, are developing smaller systems.
This innovation comes as southern European countries face significant water stress, with changing weather patterns leading to more extreme droughts. Ahbstra's CTO, Richard Perkin, emphasizes that atmospheric water harvesting is a necessary component of a comprehensive water management strategy, alongside efficiency, recycling, and infrastructure improvements.
