France Heatwave Strains Farms, Schools, Rail, and Health Services

In the Bordeaux wine region, workers are adapting by starting their shifts before dawn to avoid the peak heat of the day. Daniel Latorse, director of Chateau Latorse, explained that his seasonal staff now begin work at 6:30 AM and finish by 2:30 PM, a shift from the usual 8 AM to 6 PM schedule. Safety measures such as wearing caps, t-shirts, and shorts, along with sunscreen, are being enforced to prevent sunburn and heatstroke. A 17-year-old seasonal worker, Hugo, noted that this adapted schedule allows for afternoon rest and avoids working during the most unbearable hours.

Across France, the heatwave is disrupting daily life. Classrooms in schools are becoming difficult to bear, prompting some local authorities to adjust timetables or suspend activities. Building sites are also reorganizing work patterns. The transport sector is closely monitored, with disruptions already announced on several railway lines due to the risk of rails expanding and air-conditioning failures. The national railway operator, SNCF, has modified its service plan in response to the high temperatures, impacting at least 71 routes.

Beyond transport, other sectors are affected. The energy sector is seeing nuclear power plants adjust their output due to constraints related to high temperatures and river warming. Agriculture is under pressure from dry soils, impacting crops and irrigation, while the risk of fires is escalating in drought-stricken regions. Hospitals are experiencing an increase in admissions related to heat effects, particularly among vulnerable populations like children and the elderly.

Climatologists point out that these heat episodes are occurring earlier in the year and are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change. This trend is affecting much of Europe and necessitates a fundamental rethinking of how societies organize themselves in the face of extreme heat.
