Cathay Cargo is expanding its freighter operations to meet a significant increase in demand for artificial intelligence hardware. Tech companies are rushing to transport critical infrastructure from manufacturing hubs in Asia, including the Chinese mainland and Southeast Asia, prompting the airline to bolster its capacity. Executives noted that the global AI investment boom has triggered a spike in specialized, time-sensitive shipments.
To cater to this demand, Cathay Pacific Cargo is adding more Boeing 777 freighters to its fleet, which offer larger payloads, greater fuel efficiency, and lower emissions. The airline is also enhancing its digital tools, incorporating AI-powered demand forecasting and real-time cargo tracking to improve customer service and operational efficiency. Furthermore, Cathay Cargo Terminal has become the first air cargo terminal in Hong Kong to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) with its existing CCTV surveillance infrastructure. This AI-powered safety monitoring system identifies potential safety and security risks, such as improper personal protective equipment usage or unsafe vehicle movements, without focusing on individuals.
Cathay Cargo has been exploring AI for various back-end applications, including optimizing pricing and operational checks. They are also investigating the use of large language models to help digest complex regulatory information, such as dangerous goods and live animal regulations, which currently requires extensive reference materials. Proof-of-concept projects are underway to develop business cases for these AI applications, with a focus on improving data analytics for more accurate forecasting, capacity management, and understanding booking behaviors.
