Towngas customers in Hong Kong will face higher gas bills starting August 1, as the company announced a 4.4% tariff increase. This marks the first adjustment in recent years, with the company citing increased operating expenses and labor costs over the past two years as the primary drivers.
The standard gas charge will rise by 1.25 Hong Kong cents per megajoule, and the fixed monthly maintenance fee will increase by HK$1 to HK$11. Towngas stated that these charges will remain unchanged for the subsequent two years.
Following the adjustment, approximately 65% of residential customers are expected to see their monthly bills increase by no more than HK$10. For commercial and industrial users, about half will experience an increase of less than HK$320 per month.
The company also highlighted the need for substantial capital investment, estimating HK$13.1 billion for 2026 and the following five years, to maintain safe and reliable services and to support gas supply to new development areas, including the Northern Metropolis.
Towngas confirmed that concessionary measures will continue for approximately 41,000 eligible elderly people, persons with disabilities, low-income households, and single-parent families. These customers will maintain a 50% discount on the first 500 megajoules of gas consumed monthly, along with a waiver of maintenance and parts charges.
