Govil joined SoftBank in 2016, a year before the launch of the first Vision Fund, which significantly impacted the startup investment landscape with its high-conviction bets. While some of these investments proved profitable, others, such as the office-sharing firm WeWork, did not meet expectations.
SoftBank Investment Advisors CEO Alex Clavel indicated in the memo that further details regarding the transition of responsibilities would be communicated in due course. SoftBank Vision Fund declined to comment on the matter.
The Vision Fund has recently undergone restructuring and layoffs as SoftBank founder and CEO Masayoshi Son has increasingly focused the company's investment strategy on AI-related firms. Vision Fund 2, established in 2019 for earlier-stage technology startups, now serves as the primary vehicle for SoftBank's substantial investment in OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT.
