Key facts
- Oil prices are falling ahead of an OPEC+ meeting.
- The national average somatic cell count (SCC) is 158,000 cells/ml.
- The target SCC is 100,000 cells/ml or lower.
- Heavy rain has contributed to environmental mastitis.
- Poor cow flow infrastructure negatively impacts farm profitability.
Oil prices are experiencing a decline as OPEC+ prepares to convene and discuss potential production adjustments. Meanwhile, on the agricultural front, the national average somatic cell count (SCC) for cows was reported at 158,000 cells/ml in late May, a figure higher than the ideal target of 100,000 cells/ml or lower. This elevated SCC, coupled with environmental mastitis exacerbated by heavy rainfall, is impacting cow performance and farm profitability. A study by Teagasc highlighted that inadequate farm laneway infrastructure, with average widths at only 70% of recommendations and poor surface conditions, further contributes to reduced cow movement efficiency (CPM) and associated health issues like lameness and mastitis. Public road crossings were identified as a significant impediment to cow flow, reducing efficiency by 32.7%. Recommendations include maintaining optimal roadway width and surface conditions, and implementing strict hygiene and management practices to control cell counts.
