South Korea's exports achieved a record monthly high in June, soaring by 70.9% year-on-year to reach $102.25 billion. This significant growth was primarily propelled by a 199.5% surge in semiconductor shipments, a direct consequence of robust global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) products. Major semiconductor manufacturers Samsung and SK Hynix are responding to this demand by planning a substantial $2.07 trillion investment aimed at expanding their production capacity. However, some analysts caution that this aggressive expansion could lead to a future oversupply in the market.
In parallel, China's manufacturing sector demonstrated continued expansion in June, marking its seventh consecutive month of growth. The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to 51.7, indicating an increase in manufacturing activity. This expansion was bolstered by strong demand for AI-related products and a notable increase in export orders. Despite these positive trends in manufacturing and exports, domestic demand within China remained subdued.
Japan's manufacturing sector also reported growth in June, capping its strongest quarterly performance since the first quarter of 2014. New orders within the sector experienced their fastest growth in over two years, contributing to overall expansion. Output and employment figures also showed solid increases. Despite the positive growth indicators, price pressures within Japan's manufacturing sector remained elevated.
Separately, South Korea has enacted a new law intended to combat 'fake news'. This legislation has, however, generated significant apprehension among civil society groups and media organizations. Concerns have been voiced regarding the potential for this law to infringe upon free speech and lead to censorship.
