Japan's government has approved a five-fold increase in visa fees for foreign visitors, the first such hike since 1978. Effective July 1, the fee for a single-entry visa will rise from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen, and multiple-entry visas will increase from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi stated the revisions reflect inflation and exchange rate fluctuations, and do not anticipate an immediate impact on inbound tourism. The Japanese yen has been weakening, contributing to a surge in tourists to Japan, which welcomed a record 42.7 million international visitors last year. Other fees for foreigners, including permanent residency applications, are also set to increase significantly.
