BYD, a major Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is significantly expanding its Zhengzhou megafactory, a facility that now surpasses Tesla's largest plant in Austin, Texas, in size. Satellite imagery indicates the Zhengzhou factory has more than doubled in size since July 2023. The facility began production in April 2023 and produced 545,000 vehicles last year, operating at a rate of approximately one vehicle per minute. As of February, BYD employed around 60,000 workers at the Zhengzhou site, with plans to add an additional 20,000 employees in the first quarter of the year. This expansion is part of BYD's broader strategy to build factories and stores worldwide, aiming to compete beyond China's domestic EV market.
