The first export consignment of Geographical Indication (GI) tagged Tezpur Litchi from Assam has reached Dubai, marking a significant step in expanding international market access for agricultural products from the North Eastern Region. The one-metric-tonne shipment was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
Tezpur Litchi is a celebrated horticultural product from Assam, known for its sweetness, aroma, and quality. The GI status has enhanced its market recognition and appeal to international buyers. This export highlights the growing acceptance of India's GI-tagged agricultural products globally and the export potential of the North Eastern Region.
The consignment was ceremonially flagged off in the presence of local officials and representatives from M/s DMR Green Valley Agro Fresh Pvt. Ltd. Growers involved in the export supply chain received approximately 10% higher prices compared to domestic rates, despite strong local demand. This initiative is expected to encourage greater participation in export-oriented value chains, contributing to increased farmer incomes and sustainable livelihoods.
The successful export to Dubai is anticipated to pave the way for larger export volumes and further strengthen the global presence of Assam's GI-tagged products, underscoring APEDA's efforts to promote agricultural exports from the region.
