- The server enables AI tools to communicate with the X API using user account permissions.
- Developers can now focus on building applications rather than server integration.
- X aims to be recognized as an information network with real-time data.
- The platform has also updated its API to combat AI-generated spam and increased pricing.
X, the social network owned by Elon Musk, has introduced a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to facilitate easier integration for AI tools. The new server, unveiled on Monday, allows AI assistants such as Claude, Cursor, and Grok Build to connect directly to the X platform's API by utilizing a user's existing account permissions.
Previously, developers were required to build and host their own MCP servers to connect AI assistants to X, a process that involved significant time and effort for integration and authentication. With X now hosting the MCP server, developers can bypass this infrastructure hurdle and concentrate on their application development. This move positions X as a valuable source of real-time data for AI analysis, moving beyond its traditional role as a social media platform.
X joins a growing list of companies, including GitHub, Slack, Notion, Stripe, and Salesforce, that offer official MCP servers or endpoints. Despite the ease of integration, X has implemented measures to mitigate potential misuse, such as automated posting and spam. The platform's API v2 was updated earlier this year to address AI-generated spam, particularly programmatic replies. Furthermore, X recently increased its API pricing for publishing posts and links, stating the hikes were designed to "curb vectors of misuse."
