Waymo is recalling 3,871 of its robotaxis in the United States due to a software flaw that could lead the vehicles to enter closed freeway construction zones while in operation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall on Thursday.
The issue affects certain Fifth Generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS) in Waymo's robotaxis. The NHTSA stated that Waymo has already modified the scope of its vehicle operations to restrict freeway driving.
To resolve the problem, Waymo will update the ADS software free of charge. This update is designed to improve the vehicle's ability to detect its location and avoid entering construction zones.
