Spotify announced on Tuesday that it will begin labeling AI-generated artists with 'AI Persona' profile tags and will exclude their music from its editorial and algorithmic recommendations. Starting in mid-September, users will see these badges on profiles that represent AI-generated identities rather than real people. The company will conduct reviews of artist profiles, prioritizing those with significant listenership, to identify and label AI Personas. These badges will be visible on artist banners, 'About' sections, search results, and playlists. By default, music from AI Personas will not be included in personalized recommendations unless a user explicitly chooses to follow such an artist. This policy aims to balance the integration of AI-driven innovations, such as AI-powered playlists and DJ features, with the need to prevent a proliferation of low-quality, mass-produced AI content that could degrade the user experience. Spotify also stated that artists will have the ability to appeal if they believe their profile has been incorrectly labeled as an AI Persona. The company emphasized that the 'AI Persona' designation pertains to the artist's public identity, not the method of music creation, with other features like AI Credits and SongDNA providing information on music production. A tool for users to report unlabeled AI Personas will also be rolled out. The new labels will help distinguish AI Personas from AI-generated remixes and covers, which Spotify recently began permitting through licensing deals with UMG and Merlin.
