Just Eat Takeaway is expanding its AI voice ordering tool across Europe, following its launch in the UK earlier this year. The feature, now available in Poland, Spain, Austria, Italy, Belgium, and Switzerland, aims to streamline the ordering process for customers.
The in-app assistant allows users to speak or type requests, with the AI capable of suggesting food based on criteria such as price and dietary needs, as well as identifying nearby restaurants or adding groceries to a basket. Early data from the UK launch indicates that customers using the voice function found their orders approximately 40% faster than those using the text-based AI assistant. Furthermore, the company claims these users were 30% more likely to select a restaurant or dish recommended by the tool compared to those using the traditional search function.
Jörg Gerbig, Just Eat Takeaway’s chief corporate development officer, stated that the company is addressing the challenge of customer indecision during the ordering process. The broader rollout comes seven months after the initial UK introduction of the voice assistant. While the latest figures provide evidence of faster searches, they do not yet indicate an increase in overall order volumes or spending.
This strategic move by Just Eat occurs as delivery companies increasingly focus on AI and automation to differentiate themselves beyond price and delivery times. Competitors like Uber Eats have also integrated AI tools for menu descriptions, review summaries, and image generation. Just Eat itself is enhancing its internal AI capabilities for tasks such as uploading restaurant menus and managing customer service inquiries, including plans for automating refund decisions.
