This strategic move is a direct response to the increasing importance of low-cost drones in contemporary conflicts, as evidenced by their use in Ukraine and the Middle East. The company's initiative aligns with Japan's broader national strategy to cultivate a homegrown defense industry.
In parallel, the Japanese Ministry of Defense has announced the dispatch of four Self-Defense Forces personnel to the headquarters of NATO's Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) in Germany. This decision aims to gather lessons learned from the conflict, particularly concerning the "new-way of warfare."
Japanese venture Terra Drone has been actively involved in Ukraine, partnering with local drone builder Amazing Drones. Together, they have announced the operational deployment of short-range interceptor drones, the "Terra A1" and "Terra A2." Terra Drone has also made a strategic investment in WinnyLab, another Ukrainian defense technology company specializing in fixed-wing interceptor drones. Terra Drone's CEO, Toru Tokushige, has emphasized a strategy of decentralized production in Ukraine to mitigate the risk of factories becoming targets.
The Terra A1 drone is designed for rapid deployment and high-speed interception, capable of reaching 302 km/h with an operational range of up to 32km. The Terra A2 model offers a maximum speed of 310 km/h, a flight time of 40 minutes, and an operational range of up to 75 km.
