Key facts
- Japan Radio Co., SKY Perfect JSAT, and Sharp Corporation will collaborate on a Ministry of Defense program.
- The project focuses on developing and demonstrating a resilient multi-orbit communications system.
Japan's Ministry of Defense has selected Japan Radio Co., JRC, SKY Perfect JSAT, and Sharp Corporation to develop and demonstrate a next-generation communications system. The project aims to enhance communication resilience by integrating Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and Geostationary Orbit (GEO) satellites.

This collaboration signifies a strategic investment by Japan's Ministry of Defense in advanced satellite communication technologies to bolster national security and disaster response capabilities by ensuring reliable connectivity across multiple orbital paths.
Japan Radio Co. (JRC), SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation, and Sharp Corporation are set to collaborate on a Ministry of Defense program aimed at developing and demonstrating a next-generation communications system. The initiative, titled "Development and Demonstration of Resilience-Enhancing Technologies for Multi-Orbit Communications Systems," seeks to enhance the resilience and reliability of communication infrastructure.
Under the project, which runs until March 31, 2028, the three companies will work to create a system that can seamlessly switch between communication links across Geostationary Orbit (GEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. JRC will manage overall project coordination, SKY Perfect JSAT will focus on developing a seamless communications network, and Sharp will be responsible for creating a multi-orbit-capable satellite communications user terminal.
The program is a response to expanding communication demands in disaster prevention and defense sectors, emphasizing the need for stable communications during natural disasters and unforeseen events. The collaboration aims to validate improvements in communication network resilience and contribute to maintaining critical social functions and ensuring safety and security.
