The primary objective is to accelerate battlefield decision-making processes and enhance operational synergy with the U.S. military. Palantir Technologies' Maven Smart System is reportedly a leading candidate for adoption, capable of analyzing vast amounts of data from various sources to identify threats and suggest courses of action.
The move is part of a broader defense transformation for Japan, shifting focus towards digitally supported decision-making. The government intends to incorporate the expanded use of command-and-control AI into three key national security documents by year-end and may allocate related expenses in its fiscal 2027 budget request. This initiative aims to improve interoperability during joint missions with U.S. forces.
However, the proposal has sparked debate within Japan regarding "AI sovereignty." Concerns about technological dependence on foreign firms, data control, and wartime operating authority are prominent. Consequently, there are growing calls from within the government and ruling coalition to develop domestic AI command-and-control systems.
